In my work I use four different phototechniques:
The photo-etching on zinc plates comes from an old printing process, the Heliogravure. I use mostly photos taken by myself, though sometimes also found ones. For me it is important that the images transmit a sense of timelessness.
The photo-enamelling: Here I work with a very small company in Portugal, who still knows how to do this process. Again I mostly use pictures taken by me, which they enamel for me in the cut I want.
The Tintype (Ferrotype): was invented in the US at the end of the 19 th century, after the Daguerreotype. It is a direct positive method, meaning that the object is directly exposed on the metal plate. I find the old plates on fleamarkets , or they were given to me. Tintypes were mostly used for portraits.
These unknown persons fascinate me every time all over again, they are always new, different , peculiar, tell me new secrets, new stories, even I don’t know the people and their histories.
I try to give back some extraordinary of the people shown.
In 2015 I met somebody who still knows how to do the Tintype process. The process (wet plate collodium-photography) is the same as the antique Tintypes. We use aluminium as a base, so we call them Alutypes. Again, the result are one-of-a-kind photoplates .The relatively long exposure time (4 to 30 sec.) gives them a special character. They convey a different kind of stillness, an even stiller reality.
Through the transformation of the image on metal the photos are turned into gems.
I always do also pieces without using photography. They are just as important to me as the photo-pieces .
In meinen Arbeiten verwende ich vier verschiedene Fototechniken
Die Fotoätzung: Ich ätze Fotos in Zinkplatten. Die Technik kommt von der Heliogravure, einer alten Drucktechnik. Ich verwende hauptsächlich Fotos, die ich selbst gemacht habe. Manchmal nehme ich auch gefundene Bilder.
Für mich ist wichtig, dass die Bilder zeitlos sind.
Das Emailfoto: Hier arbeite ich mit einem kleinen Familienbetrieb in Portugal zusammen, die noch über diesen Prozess bescheid wissen. Normalerweise emaillieren sie Bilder, die auf Friedhöfen verwendet werden. Ich schicke ihnen meine Fotos, und sie emaillieren sie mir in der Form, die ich mir wünsche. Auch hier verwende ich meistens Fotos, die ich selbst gemacht habe.
Die "Tintype" (Ferrotypie). Dies ist eine alte Fototechnik, die Ende des 19. Jh. in den USA aufkam. Es ist ein Direkt-Positiv Verfahren,
das heißt, das Foto wird direkt auf die Platte belichtet. Ferrotypien wurden hauptsächlich für Portraits verwendet. Ich finde die alten Platten in Trödelläden oder sie werden mir geschenkt.
Diese Bilder fremder Menschen sprechen mich immer wieder aufs Neue an, sie erzählen immer andere Geschichten, obwohl ich die Menschen und ihre Geschichte nicht kenne.
2015 traf ich jemanden, der diese alte Fototechnik beherrscht. Seitdem arbeiten wirzusammen um neue Fotoplatten im Direkt- Positiv- Verfahren herzustellen. Nun nicht auf Eisen-, sondern auf Aluminiumplatten. So nennen wir sie Alutypien. Wieder sind es Fotounikate, es gibt kein Negativ, keine Reproduktionsmöglichkeit.
Die relativ lange Belichtungszeit (4-30 sec) gibt ihnen eine Art Hyperrealität, eine besondere, „Stille Realität“.
Ich arbeite immer auch an Schmuckstücken ohne Bilder. Mir sind sie genauso wichitg wie die Fotoarbeiten.
